The Divisons
In our prone matches competitors may participate in one of several divisions, check the program for each match to ensure compliance:
  • Service Rifle
    (AR15, M14, M1 in .223, .308 and 30-06/.308 respectively)
  • Match Rifle
    (iron sights, 5  round magazine)
  • Any Rifle
(iron sights, no other restrictions other than no muzzle brake and .30 caliber or less)
  • Any Rifle/Any Sights
(iron sights or scope, no other restrictions other than no muzzle brake and .30 caliber or less)
  • Palma Rifle
(iron sights, .308 only or Service Rifle)
  • F-Class
(scoped rifles, supported rifles or both)

The first five divisions are fired with arms as described by NRA rules from the prone unsupported position (sling only, no rests).  F-Class is fired with any rifle (no more than .30 caliber) with a bipod or forward rest and a rear rest if desired. One piece rests are  not authorized nor are rail guns.

Because of the distances involved, competitors are cautioned to use only rifles and bullets capable of stable flight over said distances. The 55gr .223 bullet's use is not authorized at distanced beyond 300 yards.

General Information

The Desert Sharpshooters Rifle Club conducts a regular series of matches and practices at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility from October through April of each year.
The complete schedule may be viewed here.

All prone courses of fire are conducted in a slow fire format with either two or unlimited sighting shots (depends on the match) in a time limit of one minute per shot including sighters. Competitors fire one shot at a time, single loaded, with the target being pulled and marked after each shot.

The 3 x 600 Match is fired in three stages from the 600 yard line. Competitors fire two sighters and 20 shots for record during each stage in a 22 minute time limit for a total of 600 points.  The 3 x 600 Matches will contribute to a NRA Mid-Range classification.  Mid Range Prone is a similar format, although varying distances are used and the time limit is 17 minutes for 2 sighters and 15 record shots. 300 Meter International and 1000 yard matches allow 30 minutes for each string of 2 sighters and 20 record shots.

Registration for these matches is listed on the individual match programs.
