How much does it cost to shoot with the Desert Sharpshooters?
It only costs $11 per day to shoot a practice. Approximately $9 of that goes to the Ben Avery Shooting Facility, and the additional $2 goes to the Desert Sharpshooters to help cover the cost of insurance, targets, and supplies to operate.
Do I have to be a member to shoot with the Desert Sharpshooters?
There is no membership required to shoot with the Desert Sharpshooters. Everyone is welcome to join during any of our regular scheduled practices at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility.
Can I show up and shoot anytime when the Desert Sharpshooters are shooting on the 1000 yard range?
No, everyone must show up at the beginning of the practice in the pits to help set up and get assigned a target.
Can I come to a practice or match and spectate and not shoot?
Yes, feel free to come watch and talk to the shooters.
What are the "pits" and how do I get there?
The pits are where the targets are. To get to the pits drive down the dirt road on the inside of the dirt berms on the 1000 yard range towards the targets. The road will take you into the pits where the targets are and the target carriers are. This is where shooters will pull and mark targets while others shoot at the targets.
How do you pull and mark targets?
This is the process where the target is pulled down into the pits after every shot and marked with a spotter, which is a large white or black disk, and a scoring disk. The spotter shows the shooter on the firing line where the shot impacted on the target and the scoring disk shows the shooter the numerical value of the shot.
